Local Biodiversity, the first exhibition area, introduces the vibrant nature of Hong Kong from the aspects of a terrestrial, marine, estuary, stream and an aerial point of view. You will find typical information on endemic species of plants, mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, freshwater fish and insects, as well as wildlife habitats such as woodlands and sandy beaches in Hong Kong.

This area is connected to the next one, covering the theme Variety in the World. A huge variety of the world’s life forms is presented here. You will travel from a flat grassland across a dense jungle and then to the depths of the ocean, where you will learn more about the flora and fauna around the world, the adaptation of animals, as well as the global problem of the extinction of species.

Through a series of enlightening interactive exhibits, you will also learn about the history of the Earth and gain an insight into the life sciences.

At the centre of the Gallery, there is a research station called the Nature Lab. You will become a scientist, experience hands-on scientific research and learn experimental techniques such as microscopy. Your attention will also turn to an extraordinary artwork on the wall of the Lab. The artwork appears to be a painting, but if you take a closer look, you will find that the patterns are made up of specimens. The Lab will certainly capture your imagination with some of the marvels and beauty of nature.
